We Followed A London Tube Driver For A Day — Here’s What It’s Like

August 11, 2019

(whimsical classic music) – My name is Jackie Moriarty, I’ve been a TFL Tube driver for 19 years. I definitely didn’t plan to be a train driver when I was growing up. I did have a bit of a railway background before I came onto the
Underground, but not as a driver. I think it’s a job that can
be completely chilled out until something happens, and then you have to react really quickly. It’s not unusual for people
to run just as the door is almost closed, and pull it back open. You see things that you
think are quite silly, but this is London, I think
we’re used to the unusual. (whimsical orchestral music) The things I enjoy about
being a train driver is we get free travel on TFL, so we get free travel on the Tube and the bus. It’s a job that you can
work around family life. With the shift system
and the systems that they have in place once you
get here, you can swap for different shifts,
so you can kind of fit the job around childcare and
any other commitments, really. Sometimes it can be a little bit isolating because you’re working alone, so I suppose that is one of the downsides of the job. (whimsical orchestral music) No two days are the same; you can have a very quiet period, then you might have a day where lots of things happen. Those days tend to go quite quickly. Any job can be boring if you’ve
done it for quite a while, but I do enjoy this job,
and I can see myself staying in this job, definitely. (whimsical orchestral music)

As a pilot, I would have to say their salary is nothing for the public to complain about. Train drivers have a huge responsibility. Not just the Tube but all rail lines as well. It is well known that the two safest modes of travel are air and rail. Sure, serious incidents happen from time to time and they make the news…because they are so few and far between. The most critical period for an aircraft is during take off and landing, the rest is fairly mundane really, in a modern commercial aircraft, although pilots are continually monitoring, they do not just sit back and stare into space. The chance of an aircraft colliding with another is virtually zero during flight. Same goes for trains on rails really, although it can happen. Train drivers on the other hand have to be continually looking and checking. This is ground transport, where anything can go wrong, from people doing "one unders" at stations, (not just at Tube stations either), cars stalled or stuck at level crossings, people on tracks, the list goes on. Signals have to be observed continually, and trains have to be stopped safely at platforms, with passenger safety and comfort in mind. Whilst there may be a lot more theory required to operate an aircraft, once in the air and the aircraft is performing correctly, which is 99.9 per cent of the time, little can go wrong of an emergency nature. people cannot jump under a plane in the air, if the weather causes a rough ride that is not pilots fault, there are no vehicles blocking our route needing emergency reactions, and if another plane was a bit close there would be alarms and automatic inputs to avoid it. Trains cannot be steered, they cannot avoid objects and can take a while to stop. They have no reverse thrust capabilities like an aircraft, or flaps and rudders to steer with. only the rails. And most issues with trains are caused by the public. At airports, passengers are only a very small reason for problems. So do train drivers deserve their 50 thousand plus a year salaries. You bet. And remember, they are paying tax on their salary also. Like pilots, they want to get their passengers home safely and without incident. And to do that, it takes extensive training, (as well as involved exams) to achieve it. As for the strikes, no industry is immune from those. I think flyboy747uk's comment here sums it up fairly well.

Why should their family get free travel, what have they got to do with the job ? The difference when it comes to transport in the US and this shithole is this dump are a money making machine, the americans will keep fares AFFORDABLE because they know the people have to get around their city to do their business, and keep them out of their cars.

One of the easiest jobs in the world for the best salary. £100K plus, gold plated pension, more annual leave than teachers, free travel on buses and tube throughout all of London, and constant strikes to demand more! All that to just pull a lever up and down occasionally, one of the greatest cons to ever hit London.

  • Reply shyam sundar March 2, 2019 at 5:43 pm

Working for tfl is financially. Pay rises, promotions, free travel, no stress involved and excellent final pension scheme. But all this comes at a huge cost…your social life goes down the drain. And thats the real reason why employees go on strike. The work life balance isnt really there.

I don't think people realise that after 6 weeks of learning the rule book you are fully responsible for your actions. If you don't follow the rules to the letter and someone gets killed due to your negligence you're going down for manslaughter. It's a huge responsibility and you are responsible for thousands of people's lives on a daily basis. One wrong move and it could be fatal. It's most definitely not stress free and you're constantly under pressure. That's why the money is so good. Say goodbye to any kind of social or family life.

Some naive people in this comment section. 50 k a year is still absolutely peanuts in London. Why don’t you imbeciles go and vent your anger at the bankers and other white collar workers who whilst ripping plenty of the general public off are in some cases earning 50k per MONTH..!
Leave these ordinary train drivers alone who are lets be honest on moderate wages for the capital.

  • Reply E A April 23, 2019 at 10:28 pm

First image there. Queen’s Park. That’s a bloody nightmare. Every time trains stop there, before and after for about 10/15 min. The average journey for people living in zone 2/3 it’s a little more than half an hour. Plus the noise on the Bakerloo line Jesus.

Why do you Brits keep complaining that tube drivers are overpaid?? It is comparable to other major cities. NYC subway drivers make around $75,000 USD. Some commuter railroads make about $95,000. People keep saying NHS nurse get paid less. Well then your nurses are underpaid not tube drivers overpaid. Nurses here make more than Subway drivers on average.

  • Reply Mary Christmas May 4, 2019 at 2:23 pm

It states 'most trains require little input from the driver', so why are they paid so much more than bus drivers who have to give 100 % input 100% of the time!

Commenters here complaining that tube drivers get payed more than them &that they strike too much. They get payed a living wage because they have a strong union. If you had a strong union in your workplace you would also be making similar money to them. But you’re directing your anger at the wrong target.
