Tokaido Shinkansen Tokyo to Osaka and Kyoto – The Bullet Train!

October 11, 2019

Are you ready to go from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka on the Shinkansen Bullet Train? Today we will cover ticket when you need to reserved seats, how to use your JR Pass and ticket prices. Hello and welcome back! My name is Amy Moncure and we are creating the travel videos that we look for when we’re planning our trips! If you want concise travel videos full of
practical tips and useful information, Subscribe and click on that notification bell. Let’s get started. There are three Shinkansen trains on the Tokaido
line going from Tokyo to Kyoto and Ōsaka: the Nozomi, the Hikari, and the Kodama. The Nozomi is the fastest train reaching Kyoto
in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Hikari takes about the same amount of
time at 2 hours and 30 minutes. However, the Kodama takes about 4 hours because
it stops at all of the stations in between. To take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto or Osaka, you will depart from Tokyo or Shinagawa Station. Unreserved seat tickets costs 13,080 Yen on all three of the trains. I recommend booking reserved seats during
rush hour and during the busiest holiday seasons. Rush hour is between 7 and 9AM and 5 and 7PM. Tickets can sell out more than a week ahead
during Golden Week, Obon, and New Year’s Holiday. Golden Week begins April 29th and includes a cluster of National Holidays through May 5th. Traveling between April 27th and May 6th will
be difficult. Obon, a time to honor one’s ancestors, is
generally between August 13th and August 16th. Travel between August 11th – August 20 will
be croweded as people return to their hometowns. Durning the Japanese New Year, the Japanese
travel on December 28th through the 30th to cerebrate the New Year with their families and come back to where they live January 2nd through the 4th. Reserved tickets go on sale at 10AM exactly
one month before. Reserved tickets sell out immediately during
these peak travel dates. It will still be possible to buy an unreserved ticket. However, plan on standing in long lines for a while. Arriving earlier in the morning will certainly
shorten your wait time. For Reserved seats:
The Nozomi costs 13,910 Yen. The Hikari and Kodama costs 13,600 Yen. To save up to 2000 or 3000 Yen, discount tickets
are also available on the Kodama all stops train at the JR Tours website. To use your JR Pass go to any JR Station and
look for either the Travel Service Center or the Green Jr Ticket Office. With your JR Pass, you can book tickets on
any Hikari or Kodama train. However, you cannot use your JR Pass on the fastest Nozomi train. What other questions or helpful tips do you
have for taking the Shinkansen Tokaido to Kyoto or Osaka? Let us know in the comments section and if

JR pass was a good deal, could ride anytime to anywhere on the JR network. Nice video, great info! I love how your ears pop when they pass in opposite directions at full speed out in the countryside.

One thing worth mentioning is, with a JR rail pass you can get Reserved seats for FREE.
And if there is space, you can PAY to upgrade to the Green Car.
Best to book your seats on Shinkansen a day or Two in advance. and also your Return trip.
