The National Academy of Railroad Sciences at JCCC

August 14, 2019

My name is Terry Murphy-Latta, I’m the Director
of the National Academy of Railroad Sciences. We’ve had the
opportunity to work with BNSF Railways. They use their technical
expertise along with our expertise in teaching and learning.
And so we’ve been able to work together since the mid ’80s to
develop a strong railroad program, and it’s renowned throughout
the United States with short lines and with other class one
railroads. I’m Kimberly Preston. I came through in August
of 2014, and I was here until my birthday, which was September
11th of 2014, and I got my interview with BNSF on the day after
my birthday, which was September 12th of 2014, and I had my job
offer with BNSF by 1 o’clock that afternoon. All because of NARS.
Hi, I’m Nicholas Carey. I graduated the September 2013 conductor
class at NARS. With this class under your built you’re going
to be prepared all the way. It’s just been a really fantastic
experience. I’ve really been happy with my decision to do this
class. My name is Matt House, and I attended the April-May class
of 2014 at NARS. And then at the end of class I did the interview,
and two weeks later I got a call from BNSF asking me if
I want a job here in Kansas City. I would have to say my favorite
part was definitely going out in the field and actually applying
all the different skills and terms that we learned here in the
class and really enjoyed that. Oftentimes we hear, “I’ve always
wanted to work for the railroad.” And so they come here for
six weeks if they’re a conductor, and we hear this time
and time again, “This has changed my life. This program has changed
my life.”
