High-speed train linking Orlando and Miami faces opposition

    October 21, 2019

COOL FRONT OF THE SEASON STRAIGHT AHEAD. BIG OPPOSITION GATHERING FOR ALL ABOARD FLORIDA THE HIGH-SPEED TRAIN THAT WOULD LINK ORLANDO AND MIAMI NEXT YEAR ALONG THE FLORIDA COAST THOUSANDS ARE GEARING UP TO STOP IT. WESH 2’S DAN BILLOW IS BY THE TRACKS IN COCOA. WHAT’S THE FEAR? MARTHA, THE FEAR IS THAT WHEN 32 TRAINS A DAY, ADDITIONAL TRAINS COME DOWN THESE TRACKS, IT WILL HURT PEOPLE’S PROPERTY VALUES, THREATEN THEIR SAFETY, AND COST THEM MONEY WHEN NO OFF-SETTING BENEFIT. JUST A FEW FEET FROM OUR BEDROOM. THAT’S HOW CLOSE THE TRAINS COME TO JENNY BAILEY’S PLACE. AND THE GLASSWARE IN THE HOUSE SHAKES AND, YOU KNOW, IT’S PRETTY NOISY. MULT FLY THAT BY — MULTIPLY THAT BY THOUSANDS AND YOU BEGIN TO SEE THE OPPOSITION TO ALL ABOARD FLORIDA. THE 110-MILE-AN-HOUR TRAIN SERVICE COULD BEGIN NEXT YEAR WITH 32 TRAINS A DAY AND NO STOPS IN BETWEEN. TODAY THE BREVARD COUNTY COMMISSION SIGNALED ITS OPPOSITION ALTHOUGH THEY HELD OFF ON PASSING A FORMAL RESOLUTION. I DON’T THINK IT’S IN THE BEST INTEREST OF RESIDENTS AND ESPECIALLY THOSE ALONG THE PATH OF THE RAILROAD. THERE WILL BE SOUND ISSUES. THERE WILL BE HOUSING VALUE THAT’S DECLINE. EXECUTIVES WITH ALL ABOARD FLORIDA HAVE SAID THEY DON’T NEED LOCAL APPROVAL TO START THE SERVICE. THEY ALREADY OWN THE TRACKS. THEY SAY THEIR SHORT PASSENGER TRAINS WILL BE QUIETER THAN THE CURRENT FREIGHT TRAINS AND WILL CLEAR INTERSECTIONS IN 60 SECONDS. QUICKER THAN A TRAFFIC LIGHT. IN PLACES LIKE BAREFOOT BAY AND MICCO RESIDENTS ARE SAYING THEY’LL BE HELD PRISONER BY CONSTANT TRAIN TRAFFIC. THEY CAN’T GET TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE TRACKS TO GET TO THE HOSPITALS WITHOUT GOING CLEAR OUT TO BABCOCK ROAD AND AROUND. WHEN YOU ARE SICK, THAT’S A LONG TIME. SINCE THE TRAIN TRACKS WERE HERE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE AND SINCE THE RAILROAD HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY, COMMUNITIES, LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HAVE TO MAINTAIN THE ROADS THAT CROSS THOSE TRACKS AND COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE CONCERNED THAT THAT COULD COST AN ADDITIONAL UPWARD OF A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR FOR ALL ABOARD FLORIDA.

Disney monorail power outage believed to be weather related

AN EVACUATION AT DISNEY’S ICONIC MONORAIL. THE LAST TIME WAS IN 2009 WHEN LIGHTNING STRUCK THE TRAIN. IT IS NOT A FREQUENT OCCURRENCE BUT SOMETHING WE TRAIN AND PREPARE FOR, YOU KNOW, FREQUENTLY DUEOUT THE YEAR SO WE’RE PREPARED JUST IN CASE SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS. IT’S UNCLEAR WHAT CAUSED SUNDAY’S POWER OUTAGE WHICH OCCURRED DURING SEVERE RAIN. DISNEY OFFICIALS SAY THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THE TRAIN WAS STRUCK. WE BELIEVE IT’S WEATHER RELATED BUT I DON’T KNOW FOR SURE. I CAN’T CONFIRM WHAT THE CAUSE WAS. ASSISTANT CHIEF JONES SAYS THEY RECEIVED A 911 CALL AROUND 6:30 SUNDAY EVENING WHEN THE MONORAIL LOST POWER. DISNEY TRIED TO REENERGIZE THE TRACKS IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET THE TRAIN TO THE NEAREST STATION. WHEN THAT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL WE BEGAN TO HELP REMOVE THE GUESTS FROM THE CAR. 120 GUESTS HAD TO BE REMOVED. ONE PERSON TWEETED… LITERALLY STUCK ON A MONORAIL AT DISNEY. LIGHTNING STRUCK AND WE IMMEDIATEEDLY STOPPED. I’M CONVINCED I AM GOING TO DIE. JONES SAYS SOME WERE EVACUATED THROUGH THE EMERGENCY HATCH AND HAD TO WALK ACROSS THE TOP OF THE CARS SECURED TO A SAFETY LINE BEFORE THEY WERE ABLE TO CLIMB DOWN STAIRS. OTHERS INCLUDING GUESTS IN WHEELCHAIRS WERE EVACUATED USING A SPECIAL PLATFORM. WE STARTED WITH A PLATFORM TRUCK THAT WE HAVE THAT’S DESIGNED TO LIFT UP ON SCISSORS LIFTS UP TO THE LEVEL OF THE MONORAIL. DISNEY SAYS THEY’LL REVIEW THE INCIDENT BUT STRESS NOBODY WAS INJURED. FROM THE TIME WE BEGAN EVACUATION PROCESS WE HAD ALL THE GUESTS REMOVED IN AN HOUR. THE MONORAIL WAS UP AND

WESH 2 MARINA MOCK SLIF OUTSIDE DISNEY THIS MORNING. MARINA, SOME PEOPLE ON THAT TRAIN ARE SAYING THEY HEARD LIGHTEN. YEAH, STEWART AND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA. THOSE PASSENGERS BELIEVE THAT IT WAS LIENTING THAT STRUCK THEIR TRAIN OR THE MONER RAIL RATHER AND THAT’S WHAT CAUSE TD THE POWER OUTAGE. NOW, DISNEY HAS YET TO CONFIRM ANY OF THAT WITH YOU THEY SAY AT THIS POINT THAT WHATEVER HAPPENS IS WEATHER RELATE NOW. CAN, TAKE A LOOK AT CHOPPER 2 IMAGES FROM UP ABOVE JUST AS CREWS WORKED ON THE MONER RAIL. 120 TOTAL PASSENGERS SIGNED THAT SIX TRAIN EPCOT MOARN RAIL LINE WHEN THE POWER DIED JUST PASS #-D 6:30 LAST NIGHT NOT FAR FROM THE WILDERNESS LONG. DISNEY DID TRY RESTORING POUT WE ARE WITH YOU THEY WERE ABE U- UNTIEBL DO SO SO THEY CALLED IN FIRE CREWS TO HELP EVACUATE ALL THE PANGSZ. HERE ARE PICTURES FROM THE PASSENGERS ON THE TRAIN. A FIRE TRUCK LEARD IS TRYING TO REACH THEM. MANY OF THOSE PASSENGERS EVENTUALLY HAD TO GET OUT THROUGH THE ROOF OF THE TRAIN BECAUSE THE DOORS WOULD SIMPLY NOT OPEN. EVENTUALLY THEY MADE IT FROM THE EMERGENCY HATCH OUT TO AN ESCAPED STAIRWELL. WE UNDERSTAND IT WAS VERY HOT INSIDE THOSE TRAIN CARS WITHOUT ANY AC RUNNING. ONE PERSON EVEN EXPERIENCING A PAB NICK TACK AND THEN CAUSING SOME PANIC A MOONG OTHERS OF THE PASSENGERS BUT EVENTUALLY FIRE CREWS DID GET TO THOSE PASSENGERS AND THEY ALL GOT OUT SAFELY. IT TOOK THEM AN HOUR AND A HALF TOTAL TIME TO GET EVERYONE OUT. THIS MORNING THAT EPCOT LINE STILL DISABLED. WE’RE WORKING TO LEARN MORE FROM DISMY WORLD. AS SOON AS WE GET THAT, WE’LL

HAD GONE TO GET FOOD. HE IS BOOKED WITH CHILD NEGLECT AND DRUG POSSESSION CHARGES. MONORAIL IS MOVING AGAIN. IT IS UP AND RUNNING AFTER GETTING STUCK LAST NIGHT DURING STRONG STORMS. MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE HAD TO BE EVACUATED. WESH 2’S MATT GRANT JOINING US LIVE WITH MORE. DO WE KNOW IF THIS WAS A LIGHTNING STRIKE? MARTHA, IT’S STILL CONSIDERED A POTENTIAL LIGHTNING STRIKE. HOWEVER, DISNEY OFFICIALS SAY THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT LIGHTNING STRUCK THE TRAIN. CHOPPER 2 WAS THERE AS DISNEY’S FAMOUS MONORAIL RESUME NORMAL OPERATION. A DIFFERENT STORY FROM 24 HOURS AGO WHEN THE TRAIN SAT ON THE TRACKS STUCK ABOUT 120 PEOPLE HAD TO BE EVACUATED. FROM THE TIME WE BEGAN OUR EVACUATION PROCESS WE HAD ALL THE GUESTS REMOVED IN APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR. THE ASSISTANT CHIEF SAYS IT’S RARE FOR THE WEALTH TO SHUT DOWN THE MONORAIL. THE LAST TIME WAS IN 2009 WHEN IT WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. I’VE WORKED HERE 20 YEARS AND CAN ONLY RECALL TWOR ON THREE TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED. THE MONORAIL’S POWER WENT OUT AROUND 6:30 P.M. SUNDAY. DURING THAT TIME THERE WAS SEVERE WEATHER AND LIGHTNING IN THE AREA. HOWEVER OFFICIALS SAY THERE IS NO EVIDENCE LIGHTNING STRUCK THE TRAIN. WE BELIEVE IT’S WEATHER RELATED BUT I DON’T KNOW FOR SURE. THE CAUSE WILL LIKELY NOT BE DETERMINED BY AN OUTSIDE INVESTIGATION. THE NTSB WHICH INVESTIGATES ACCIDENTS SAYS THEY WILL NOT INVESTIGATE. NEITHER WILL OSHA SINCE THE INCIDENT DID NOT INVOLVE A WORKPLACE INJURY. DISNEY OFFICIALS SAY THEY WILL REVIEW WHAT HAPPENED BUT STRESS NOBODY WAS INJURED AND NOTING THE TRAIN WAS BACK UP AND RUNNING EARLY MONDAY. COMING UP AT FIVE, I’LL TELL YOU

Heavy police enforcement continues at railroad crossings

    August 14, 2019

IN A FIELD NEAR THE WAL MART ON U.S. 27. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. THAT’S WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT IS SAYING AFTER THE LATEST COLLISION BETWEEN A SUNRAIL TRAIN AND CAR IN MAITLAND. UNLUCKY DRIVERS ARE PAYING THE PRICE FOR THAT DRIVER’S MISTAKE. A CRACKDOWN AMONG DRIVERS STOPPING ON TRACKS AT MAJOR CROSSING IS UNDERWAY. BOB KEALING HAS SPENT THE AFTERNOON AT HORATIO AND MAITLAND. HOW IS IT GOING OUT THERE? WE’VE SEEN IT JUST ONE DRIVER AFTER ANOTHER. THE BIG ISSUE IS THOSE TRYING TO TURN LEFT OFF MAITLAND AVENUE ON TO HORATIO. BUT WHEN THE TRACK BACKS UP GOING TO 1792, CARS END UP STOPPED HERE ALONG THE TRACKS AND FOR THEM TODAY THAT GETS THEM AN EXPENSIVE RIDE INTO WHAT WE’RE CALLING THE RIGHT LANE OF SHAME. WHERE ARE YOU GOING? MAITLAND POLICE ARE PULLING OVER DRIVERS WHO TURN ON TO HORATIO AVENUE EVEN THOUGH IT MEANS ILLEGALLY STOPPING ON TRAIN TRACKS OR IN THE AREA WHERE CROSSING GATES COME DOWN FOR ON-COMING SUNRAIL TRAINS. POLICE STOP THE DRIVER OF THIS SUV AFTER THEY SAY SHE STOPPED IN THE CROSSING. THOUGH THE SIGN TELLS DRIVERS TO STOP BEFORE THE TRAUK TRACKS. THERE’S NO RIGHT TURN ON RED. THE COST OF THE TICKET? $164. POLICE SAY THEIR MAIN MESSAGE IS. OVERALL SAFETY FOR YOU, FOR THE PASSENGERS IN YOUR CAR, AND FOR EVERYONE ELSE AROUND YOU. PAY ATTENTION. DON’T BECOME COMPLACENT. AN ESTIMATED 40,000 CARS TRAVEL 1792 THROUGH MAITLAND EVERY DAY. MANY USE HORATIO AND OTHER ARTERIAL STREETS AS A CUT THROUGH. POLICE SAY LAST WEEK’S ACCIDENT WAS THE SECOND IN MAITLAND INVOLVING A SUNRAIL TRAIN AND THEY FEAR SERIOUS INJURIES MAY ONLY BE A MATTER OF TIME. WHEN YOU PUT A 3,000 POUND CAR VERSUS A 20 TON TRAIN YOU KNOW WHO IS GOING TO COME OUT THE WINNER. IT’S NOT GOING THEN DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE. AND BACK LIVE. YOU SEE THE OFFICER WRITING A TICKET AS WE SPEAK. ABOUT 15 OR 20 MINUTES AGO IT WAS ACTUALLY A CITY OF MAITLAND PICK UP TRUCK THAT WAS PULLED OVER AS WELL. THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS THEY SUPPORT THIS EFFORT BECAUSE NOT ONLY ARE DRIVERS PUTTING THEMSELVES AT RISK BUT ALSO ALL OF THE PEOPLE ON THOSE SUNRAIL TRAINS.

Railroad connection idea could mean 5K jobs in Port Canaveral

    August 10, 2019

WE’RE HIGHLIGHTING WHO IS GOING TO SEE RAIN THIS UPCOMING HOLIDAY WEEKEND. 5,000 JOBS WITHIN FIVE YEARS IS THE LURE PORT CANAVERAL OFFICIALS ARE DANGLING TO TRY TO GET A RAILROAD CONNECTED TO THE PORT. THE IDEA IS TO MAKE THE PORT A PLACE FOR CARGO AND JOBS, NOT JUST CRUISE SHIPS. NASA’S KENNEDY SPACE CENTER RAILROAD WHICH ONCE BROUGHT BOOSTER ROCKETS TO A PLACE WHERE 15,000 PEOPLE WORKED COULD BE THE KEY TO 15,000 NEW JOBS. PORT CANAVERAL OFFICIALS WANT TO CONNECT TO THE RAILROAD WHICH COMES WITHIN A FEW MILES OF THE PORT ALREADY. THAT WOULD BRING CARGO SHIPS TO THE PORT’S EMPTY WHARFS AND SILENT CARGO CRANE. WE SEE THE NUMBERS IN FIVE YEARS OF BEING ABOUT 5,000 JOBS IN EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA AND BREVARD COUNTY AND JUST CONTINUING TO GROW. THE NASA RAILROAD ALREADY CROSSES THE ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE INDIAN RIVER LAGOON AND THAT’S THE BIGGEST HURDLE TO GETTING RAILS TO THE PORT. TO GET HERE FROM THE KENNEDY SPACE CENTER THE RAILS WOULD STILL HAVE TO CROSS SOME SENSITIVE WATERWAYS AND THAT’S DRAWING OPPOSITION. ALEX OPERATE AS SPORTS FISHING BUSINESS. MY BUSINESS TEETERS IN THE FATE OF OUR LAGOONS AT THIS MOMENT AND TIME. IF THE FISH GO, THE PEOPLE DON’T COME. AND THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PROJECT WOULD BRING BARGES TO BE UNLOADED NEAR A TITUSVILLE AREA POWER PLANT. NEARBY RESIDENTS ARE DIVIDED ABOUT THAT. THE NOISE, THE EYESORE, IT’S LIKE AN INDUSTRIAL STRONG IS WHAT IT’S GOING WIND UP BEING REALLY. WE NEED PEOPLE. WE NEED JOBS. WE NEED TRAFFIC. PORT MANAGERS SAY THE RAILROAD WOULD CREATE FIVE TO 7,000 REGIONAL JOBS IN ITS FIRST FIVE YEARS AND UP TO 15,000 JOBS AFTER 15 YEARS. EXTENDING THE RAILS TO THE PORT FROM KSC IS AT LEAST A TWO-YEAR JOB THAT WOULD REQUIRE APPROVAL FROM MANY LOCAL AND FEDERAL AGENCIES ALONG WITH A RELATIVELY MODEST INVESTMENT OF $75 MILLION.
