Your Travel Options During Summer 2019 Blue + Yellow Line Metrorail Closures

    October 11, 2019

We are out here at the
Franconia-Springfield Metro VRE Station to inform
commuters of their travel options during the closure
of the Yellow and Blue lines during the summer of
2019. The closures will take place starting
Memorial Day weekend and lasting through Labor Day
weekend. Travelers can expect significant impact
to their normal routines. During the closure Metro
will be operating free shuttle buses out of
Franconia-Springfield as well as Huntington. In
addition to the bus service that will be provided,
commuters can also consider starting a vanpool, carpool
or teleworking if it is an option from their employer.
If you normal travel on the blue or yellow line, you
know that the trains are often crowded, during this
time passengers who may be taking any of the
alternative options should expect to add significant
time to their travel. We also have options for
employers as well as employees. employers can
reach out to Fairfax County to help establish carpools
or vanpools for their employees and they can help
provide benefits to offset that cost.

TO SET UP — MEMBERS SAY IT’S
WORTH IT TO SHARE THEIR HOBBY
WITH OTHER PEOPLE.>>THEIR EYES WILL JUST LIGHT UP
BECAUSE IT TAKES THEM BACK TO
THEIR CHILDHOOD. ALEX: THE ROARING SOUND OF A
    LOCOMATIVE ROLLING DOWN THE
TRACKS. UP CLOSE, IT LOOKS LIKE A REAL
    TRAIN, BUT IT’S ACTUALLY A
MODEL.>>THEY GO OUT TO THE REAL
    ENGINES, RECORD THE SOUNDS, THE
    BELLS, EVERYTHING IS IDENTICAL
TO WHAT IT IS ON THE BIG
ENGINES. ALEX: STAN WHITE IS A MEMBER OF
THE K AND I MODEL RAILROAD CLUB. THIS IS THE CLUB’S TRAVELING
DISPLAY, SET UP AT ST. MARY’S

    AROUND AND SEE. EVEN THOUGH
    THEY’RE INANIMATE OBJECTS, YOU
WANT TO MAKE THEM FEEL LIKE
THEY’RE LIFELIKE. ALEX: THE TRAINS CIRCLE A TOWN
THAT’S SET BACK IN THE 1950’S. COLORFUL VINTAGE CARS LINE THE
    STREETS NEXT TO BUSINESSES THAT
COULD BE REAL.>>MOST PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE YOU
CAN GET THAT ACCURATE AND ALMOST
FOOL THE EYE. THAT’S WHAT I LOVE TO DO, HAVE
    SOMEONE LOOK AT SOMETHING AND
GO, IS THAT REAL? ALEX: STUDENTS AT ST. MARY’S
    CENTER SURROUND THE DISPLAY,
TAKING IN EVERY TINY DETAIL. THE CENTER SERVES ADULTS AND
TEENS WITH DISABILITIES. IN HOPES OF SHARING THE WORK

    COMMUNITY.>>A LOT OF TIMES, THERE’S
SOMEONE WHO COMES HERE THAT IS
IN NEED OF A FACILITY LIKE ST. MARY’S. ALEX: MEMBERS OF THE RAILROAD
