    October 15, 2019

[Music] long-dead was a long day yeah I’m hungry that’s a pretty good video with the guy in the suit today so we’ve got our Becky Ben what does ecumene command is station bento train stations radio train station lunch boxes and so what did you get get this guy at the 20 mission which is chicken and eggs rice and mine is called mutant which is beef tongue yeah episode drink here like a vodka tonic it’s too high Japanese shot you five percent alcohol not one of the stronger ones are you for pretty packaging it is new packaging there’s a leaf it’s yes I believe so it’s old-school style it’s a made from as in bamboo I’m not sure what you’ll do the research on that and we’ll just stuff put a subtitle and you’re in charge okay let’s eat in charge of educating our audience it’s like Oh somebody basket-weave this just for the food Wow [Music] wow that is a box what is something like this cost remember how much is like ten bucks how about yeah ten bucks nice and compact and colorful to tango eating huh so this would be the chicken here and what kind of sauce is that on there is it sweet sure probably like a soy sauce base looks like a shiitake mushroom right there carrot give a little toast weird things came on oh no they’re really from Malfoy gushing yeah pickled vegetables these things are for refreshing your mouth yeah clears the flavor that smell I got some Ching come see I can smell it it smells really good I can meet hungry it’s kind of so lost like smells really good sweet sauce it’s a hobby soy sauce base so they’ll toss in probably a little bit of sugar so the rice is flavored – yeah it’s a really chewy once you go make really chewy rice mochi go man that stands for chewy rice I see so it sticks sticks together is easier to eat I like that sticky rice too sticky rice easy with chopsticks good stuff how’s the chicken that’s your last piece already savor it only get two pieces of chicken ten of that and a ton of rice let’s go to use kind of sad it’s kind of that but they gotta make money ten bucks they spent all the money on the packaging actually this probably costs half the price of the whole thing yeah you should save that box for what and I will will do it get some giveaway and we’ll put some stuff in that box special edition you guys want to win this box right yeah and keep anything put a comment down below if you’d like to win this box with some special treats in it Tana and Japanese stands for tongue tongue that on beef tongue Calla tongue cow tongue how’s that going to be good well it’s really thin meat that’s the trick the trick to this dump is they slice it really thin and then it’s not so tough material okay yeah chopsticks looking good oh look at that like onions here it’s probably a lemon sauce on top this is served over rice as well too and this is a tamagoyaki egg and some kind of sauce yolk I don’t even get is also maybe sauce to put on y’all with hot probably something I’ll put the sauce on top of here I think it may be the way spicy yeah yeah nice thing about these chopstick packages is not just chopsticks you also get a toothpick for the end of your meal and that nice I’m gonna have something to drink first this is going to make a lot of noise it’s very quiet on this train [Music] and everybody’s sleeping you’re tired from a long day at work [Music] who calls her very cool yours cameraman it’s very thirst-quenching is and this it gets thirsty when he goes out of these adventures all is thirsty because our type let’s not get too drunk before we have this meal try the beef tongue how is it it’s got a very unique case very chewy its chewy but it’s sliced so thin that you don’t really have to chew it that much I mean just telling you they can be really tough but it’s actually pretty tender is it a lemon based sauce on their lemon and it’s salty and there’s also some fun some pepper seasoning mittens but and then saw it’s good well done to which i think is done scrambled egg scrambled egg is it’s very sweet sugar looks kind of spicy looks like it’s adds a lot of flavor to it looks a bit creepy try this first without the meat you’re supposed to try that with the rice oh wow oh that’s really good I think that goes with the rice man it’s like a it’s like a miso better than be more concentrated than me something a couple Wow that makes a perfect ah so good it does good with the rice delish there’s all is this one thing I never get with bento is this green this is a mystery isn’t it doesn’t ever get what that’s your get this green leaf I never get what that’s more glass this is tougher than the beef tongue yeah really long juice is plastic so this is a warning to you guys if you see this inside your lunch box in Japan don’t eat it it’s plastic to garnish I think it’s just for color yeah probably all right girl okay let’s finish this bento kind of flavor is to the rice we talked about that already yeah it’s a something so probably slice off space plus with a little bit of sugar and a little bit of sweetness to it and that’s the nice thing about Japanese rice it’s sticky so it’s really easy to pick up with chopsticks especially an event all right if you take the tray out that’s a perfectly good box right under the food is touch the box yeah that’s really nice I’ll put some goodies in it and yeah what’d you guys think comment down below its a CTA what do you drink in there cafe latte some sweet after camp a hard day so it’s got sugar in it yep she’s got hotter denser hotter cold cold cold just with any after a good dinner but you can buy hot as well too right I can’t buy anything got into the convenience store in Japan right did you want to get some water she’s coming I’m good you’re good so what do you care to rate this meal this is a key been lunchbox I’m Yael on the bullet train all right we give it a four star rating more stars it’s uh it’s pretty good for a meal that you could get at a train station but you know since it’s a NICU man it’s not like the best kind of food you this kind of mental you can get but it’s decent right yeah food on the goal is good for sure yeah you can’t be yeah good varieties yeah yeah also ordered food from from her too and and it comes with cool box cannot beat this box yep spots this box is the bomb I’m going to put so much cool stuff in it comment down below if you want well your time to finish your meal smelting can you tell is the ball getting smaller it is you guys think it got smaller the bar is open [Music] finish it up see how the rice sticks together slow down not my daughter the last piece finished it off so the meat is really good it looks like you liked it so I liked it a lot cater ate it I care to use the toothpick first a little bit stuck in my teeth cut this part on I’ll tell you why guys you know it’s really help you to floss your teeth every day I floss my teeth every day and I have had no trouble with 19 but when you floss your teeth every day you have to use the two things stuff gets caught in your teeth all the time because everything’s like clean you have the capsule there it’s not so that’s my bit of advice philosophy trust this is the greatest souvenir ever and the fact I think all include the the ice ball is a souvenir in box so now I think it’s my turn to rain this meal the ecumene lunch box bullet train I think I’m going to give this meal a five star rating it’s an old milk to me the meat was really good I would like to add some more vegetables with it such as meat and risings it you don’t really have much variety of other stuff like most mentos you have a lot of different varieties and stuff grilled beef tongue Mendel you guys enjoyed this episode of our mealtime thanks for watching and we’ll see you next Saturday okay so here’s a quick rundown of the stuff I’m giving away that’s going to be in this box right here these are the paper balloons you just blow into them and they blow up like balls let’s do the food first these are the best gummies in Japan these are great flavored ones love these these are fire mints great stuff these are chewable candies high chews strawberry flavor delicious this I think is my favorite chocolate black thunder two different flavored Kit Kats this is for Easter so this is a I don’t know some sort of a bunny then this is the green tea Kit Kat also these are traditional style sweets so they’re chocolate sort of covered cookies my favorites and also over on the trick side we have the pencil trick of course and this right here is called tacky tombow or flying helicopter you put the stick inside the propeller in the two holes right there and yeah you just make a fly hand powered pirate eye patch oh yeah everyone’s got to have one of these this is the stretchy guy ericsurf6 maze this is the girly card works front and back this is a zombie sticker pack and last but not least this is not a condom it is the spinning coin and balloon trick yep so that’s it comment down below if you’d like to win this what I’m looking for in your comment I’d like to know why you watch the Eric mealtime series that’s right that’s what I’m looking for so that I can figure out what kind of stuff you guys want to see in the future and yeah it’s really all about what you guys want to see that’s what I want to make so tell me why you watch these videos the Eric mealtimes and I will announce the winner next Saturday see you then

BULLET TRAIN – Riding Japan’s Super Shinkansen – 新幹線に乗りましょ!

    October 15, 2019

Japan’s bullet train or Shinkansen system is one of mankind’s modern technological marvels in its over 50 years of operation the Shinkansen has transported over 10 billion passengers more than the total population of earth at speeds exceeding 200 miles an hour for some trains in the most earthquake-prone country on the planet one would expect the worst to happen but of all those billions of passengers there have been zero passenger fatalities in operation it’s a safe efficient and convenient system and we mean convenient on this episode of the American rail club we’re taking the world’s ultimate train from Tokyo to Osaka and back taking a day journey while exploring the history of the Shinkansen and its possibilities around the world and in America welcome aboard pick a seat and enjoy the ride [Music] [Music] it’s early in the morning on our trip to Japan and we’re taking the day to go from our hotel in Tokyo to Osaka we’ll be taking the 754 AM Nozomi Express Shinkansen from Shinagawa station to arrive at Xin Osaka by 10:20 a.m. from there we’ll go to Universal Studios Japan for the morning and afternoon and then to dote on Mori at night where we will then return back afterwards on the 9:10 p.m. Nozomi to arrive at Tokyo by 11:35 p.m. pretty full day none of us ever had a packed travel day like this by train especially between two major cities separated by over 320 miles something like this would only be possible by bullet train and it’s time to start getting to the station but first let’s pick up something to eat grabbing some breakfast over in Kamata was quick and inexpensive and the food in Japan is pretty tasty and healthier than my guilty pleasure of – bacon egg and cheese McGriddle and so we stood out our morning let’s do this you can see how everything’s like got my sheet here and I have a gonna cleaning towel everything – something you don’t see back at home afterwards time to take the K in tohoku up to Shinagawa station with our Shing Content tickets already bought the day before [Music] then it’s on to the platform of the backbone of Japan’s infrastructural engine the Shinkansen what I mean this system is punctual it redefines it entirely the clockwork of seeing this amazing system in action is awe-inspiring to anyone even if they aren’t interested in trains the engineering the speed and the timing safety and the people behind it all of this make it what it is kind of surreal but it’s like wow pretty much everything worked and I was supposed to ended this posed to be for 748 or like a 739 so everything is super punctual just the way let’s get our seats on board settle in and discuss it more in depth on board but not too much as we’ll only be here for two hours and twenty minutes to cover 320 miles but first breakfast [Music] [Music] the development of the shikon s’en literally translated as new trunk line was long in the making in 1903 Germany tested the first electric multiple unit train that reached a record 130 miles an hour compared to regular locomotives which lead the passenger cars to either push or pull a train electric multiple units or e/m use are a different layout where motors are distributed along the entire train to increase efficiency for 1903 however technology hadn’t quite figured out how to sync all the motors to not resist and limit each other but a standing impression would be made on a young engineer of the Japanese railway Bureau sent to observe the test yasujiro Shima he had a dream to create Japan’s first bullet train or Dangan arisia connecting Tokyo all through Shimonoseki the western end of Japan’s main island Honshu plans were actually made and worked for the doc gonorrhea shop project in 1939 instead of using electricity however it would be steam but those plans bombed after something called World War 2 which devastated Japan’s infrastructure and burned down a majority of Tokyo and the single most destructive and deadly bombing attack in human history Japan adhering to the principles of fall down seven times get up eight had a chance to reinvent itself and three major factors would do it number one is decision to electrify its major railways gained through the sovereignty of the San Francisco treaty Japan was under immense pressure by the United States and General MacArthur to adopt diesel engines due to austerity measures and a dependency it would create on Japan to outside sources of fuel mainly Americas but thankfully it dodged that stinky bullet number two the Japanese National Railways or jnr had this man as its president Shinji so go under his leadership JR would be able to make bold decisions to grow its services then there was a dice on sale yoku or big factor number three the chief engineer at Jan arm Hideo Chima remember yasujiro Chima earlier who witnessed the record test in Germany Hideo is his son or Musco okay I’ll try to cut back on the Japanese learning there is no quiz after this in the 1950s jay-ar was struggling to keep up with the demand of population and economic growth and proposed to plans of building new narrow gauge lines along its Tokaido corridor between Tokyo and Osaka but Shinji and had a hoe had a third infant plan I mean I meant plan this plan would build a new larger standard gauge passenger rail network segregated away from freight and slower passenger trains achieve speeds in excess of a hundred thirteen miles per hour as well as followed much of the previous bullet train plan from 1939 except this time using electric multiple units the 2500 meter turning radius four corners standard on modern Shinkansen lines that was actually carried over from the 1939 plan the plans were approved in 1958 with engineering quickly commencing and construction beginning in 1959 to connect Tokyo to Osaka this Shinkansen plan or new trunk line after the standard gauge designation also brought along the ridicule moaning and hysteria from other superiors in Jnr the Japanese government and the media all throughout the planning and construction Shima and slow go were deemed madmen for sticking to trains in a coming age of automobiles and airplane words that would probably make the best humble pie with MIT’s crow later the Shinkansen was massively expensive with a budget of 1.6 billion u.s. dollars in that year which doubled to an actual of 3.2 billion u.s. dollars from 1963 to 2018 dollars that’s nearly twenty six billion dollars even including all new engineering research design and manufacturing it’s still more than half the cost per mile of California’s now 100 billion dollar project but because of these cost overruns in out of respect both so go followed by Shima resigned from J&R before ultimately the fruit of theirs and thousands of others laborers who realized on October 1st 1964 right on time for the Tokyo Olympics the era of high-speed rail had begun since the Shinkansen opening jnr had run into a lot of cost problems but contrary to popular belief this wasn’t actually created because of debt acquired from the Shinkansen project itself quite the contrary actually it paid in spades and it was subsidizing the two biggest losses for Jun are forced construction of commuter railways in sparse urban areas and government constraints on fare increases with inflation the change came when jnr was eventually split regionally into private companies rather than a public government corporation in 1987 these new japan rail or jr companies brought the much-needed technological improvements especially to rail service like the Shinkansen which stayed with the initial zero series Hikari for nearly 20 years after introduction in 1987 the year of breakup and privatization the 100 series Shinkansen ran at a hundred 37 mile an hour top speed top speed by 1992 was increased to a hundred seventy miles an hour by the series 300 by 2000 the series 500 could reach 186 miles an hour and today and e5 Shinkansen can reach 200 miles an hour hooray for capitalism the amazing history behind the Shinkansen is the reason why Japan and its visitors are able to enjoy the comforts it affords today the seating on board is rather comfy in the reserved class with plenty of space to stretch out eat on tables and put your luggage on top without worrying about running out of space and checking it in the bathrooms aren’t pristine have actual functioning sinks push button operation and sized properly for actual human beings not goblins like on Amtrak japanese etiquette suggests for you to stay quiet at a conversational level in the cars and if you need a good walking stretch or a talk on the cell phone there’s the in-between cars that have cell phones smoking areas and bathrooms the rails on which the bullet trains right upon are as smooth as a silk kimono every night of every day a crew of about 3,000 across the network perform maintenance and needed repairs on a track that takes close to 370 trains per day the receiving a dedicated inspection train equipped with gear like laser measuring equipment called doctor yellow which is quite a rare sight but hey with my luck I snapped a picture of what a Ginza then there’s the punctuality of the entire network which I previously talked about the average delay if there even is a delay for the Shinkansen is a scant 30 seconds thanks to the teamwork of everyone and the skill of the conductor’s I’m sure you’ve seen the videos of cleaning crews that clean these trains that seat 1200 plus people in only seven minutes flat I didn’t get a chance to see them but their work obviously shows as everything is clean whisking through over the rural parts of Japan cities tunnels and mountains it becomes clear how amazing these trains really are and how it has enabled Japan’s economy to reach the level it has we were already getting close when we looked back at our watches and realize how quick two hours and 300 miles had gone nobody was cramped and we were all relaxed at exactly 1019 we were at the station and we felt cheated out of our early minute so we stayed here gawking at the bullet trains for a bit more [Music] and another weekend by the way these shirts you can get them on the ark teespring and more goodies back to scheduled programming the amount of time the bullet train has given us to enjoy another part of the country was time well spent [Music] from shin-osaka we were able to easily and quickly board a train to osaka station then transfer Anisha Kujo to head for Universal City station to Universal Studios Japan [Music] [Music] [Music] it’s almost as if somebody stopped time were able to arrive here with ease and get to basically the reason why we came to Japan in the first place JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure the ride after we did all we wanted there we had enough time to take a train over to Osaka famous daughter amore district Osaka is known for its culinary culture frequently called the kitchen of Japan there’s even a saying in Japan that goes Kyoto No kia ora Osaka no cuido meaning one dresses into decadence in Kyoto and one eats into decadence in Osaka thus the Japanese term cuidado or to over indulge yourself in food [Music] [Music] indeed the food in Osaka is amazing although I think osakans are confused with how hamburgers are used but apart from cuisine the sights and lights of Osaka are enough to feed the eyes and the senses which reminds me of the old Cuban saying of bodega Jana Corazon contento or bellyful and heart content and with our heart content and legs exhausted it was time to get ourselves back to Tokyo before midnight on the last train home upon the platform itself we were able to get ourselves some Japanese snacks and alcohol to add eyes bleary to the ailments incredible how convenient it is to have a convenience store right on the platform it just works on the way back I thought about the immense amount of possibilities a system like this would bring to the u.s. much of the world including France Germany China Taiwan Italy Spain and even Morocco now have high-speed rail systems while America has dug itself in a dark hole of automobile and airline dependency the same hole that Japan avoided nearly 50 years ago thanks to the brave and innovative men that pioneered the Shinkansen the journey we took on the Shinkansen is by car would take over six hours and eight by bus that’s already half that they’d gone sure planes once they were in the air can go pretty fast but accounting for flight time plus security check plus boarding disembarking and traveling to and from the airport and your one and a half hour flight to turn to about three or four hours of total travel time there’s a reason why the Shinkansen rules an outright majority of share and travel between these two cities for starting at around $95 for this lower service to 130 dollars for the express one-way marginally cheaper bus tickets and fluctuating airline tickets around the same prices with fees don’t seem to be a good deal and one ride on the Shinkansen you can tell why the competition is scared around the world there’s actually hope for the system to come to the US through the Texas Central Railway Company coincidentally being done with the assistance of jr. Central the same company that runs the Tokaido Shinkansen we took if you want to learn a little bit more information about that you can click this video over here although we’ll be coming out with more information on it pretty soon it’ll be linked over here Japan isn’t done yet improvements to speed on the current system are currently being tested with the new Alpha X experimental train capable of over 225 miles per hour then there’s the great leap forward with what we dub the Hyperloop killer that actually exists the SC maglev this train has been breaking record at the record with the latest one in 20 fifteen at 375 miles an hour with more to go the test line in Yamanashi will be open to the public come the 2020 Olympics around the corner rhyming with history just as Japan unveiled its first Shinkansen in 1964 maybe someday the US will be able to realize the benefits of rail and we too can raise the ceiling of what is possible within our country whether it’s an easy day trip to a city 300 miles away facilitating jobs in the new economy or bringing family together the passenger train has an important place in a nation’s of modern infrastructure Japan has proved that for itself and the rest of the world it’s amazing that more than 10 billion passengers including myself and my friends have journeyed on this amazing work of human wonder and engineering with no fatalities making it probably the safest place to be in the world on top of unheard-of punctuality spectacular speed and surplus comfort it’s an experience and adventure that you too can have and hope to get a chance to hop on board whether it’s in Japan Europe or in the near future in America thank you for watching this video on American rail club if you want more real news on transit infrastructure and high speed rail in America and around the world be sure to subscribe and pull that belt share this video with friends interested in trains or planning a trip to Japan it’s no cost and everyone is welcome aboard want to support arc further upgrade your ticket to ride by supporting us on patreon where just $1 will get you access to exclusive videos and behind-the-scenes before the general public thank you for writing them next up the future [Music]

Why did I come to Japan and make this show? ★ ONLY in JAPAN Q&A and Tokyo Tour in 360

    October 14, 2019

This is the ONLY in JAPAN 360 Question & Answer video presented in 4K. I’ve put a lot of photos and additional video all around this 360 world so definitely have a look around. If you have Google Cardboard or a Virtual Reality headset use them. If not, you can use your browser or your app and look around the world just make sure they’ve been updated. Hey everybody! ONLY in JAPAN Narrator: Peter von Gomm This is Nihonbashi which many consider to be the centre of Tokyo. It’s a hub for many traditional businesses that have been operating here for centuries. A lot of international businesses and start-ups are located here too. Welcome to Tokyo Station! This is the ONLY in JAPAN Q&A episode in 360 so help yourself and look around, you can move your smart phone around or if you’re using Google Cardboard or a VR headset welcome to a brave new world! Bold, big and beautiful! So this is Tokyo Station where you pick up the Shinkansen and the new Nihonbashi entrance which is pretty cool. I’m going to take you over now to the other side to the Marunouchi entrance which is older and traditional but they’ve renovated it so it’s quite interesting. I’m going to keep this video moving. That means I’m not going to try to stay in one spot. You’ll get a chance to look at the city and answer some of your questions while you get a chance to look around which I think is going to be pretty cool. Look up! The north and south Marunouchi ticket gates have high beautiful ceilings. The station opening in 1914 and its design is rumoured to have been based on Amsetrdam Centraal Station. This is one of my favorite places in all of the city. This is the 7th floor of the (Shin) Maru Building which is across the street from Tokyo Station. You can see the Shinkansen and all the trains whizzing by. It’s being renovated right now and should be completed within the next year. This side is Ginza. Over there behind this building you can probably see Tokyo Tower. And behind us is the Imperial Palace which is where the emperor lives and it’s flat and green and absolutely beautiful. And at night, the view from here is spectacular! I highly recommend coming to the 7th floor of the (Shin) Maru Building. This is also an appropriate place to start the questions and answer series. With this question: Why did I start ONLY in JAPAN? — and that happened right after the earthquake on March 11, 2011. A couple of months after the earthquake happened tourism died here in this country and that really broke my heart because I had been living here for over 15 years at the time. and know how incredible Japan is. I just wanted to take what I was doing — I was already reporting on an Internation TV station (NHK World) — to take that reporting to another level because YouTube is a platform that allows me the freedom to do whatever I want to go anywhere, to see anything That’s really exciting to me, and I wanted to do that. In 2012, I drew up the blueprints for ONLY in JAPAN and in 2013, I launched the series in February with the NAKED MAN FESTIVAL which was a lot of fun. In 2003 was also a reason I decided to stay in Japan. I hitchhiked the whole country from Wakkanai on the top of Hokkaido to Kagoshima, the very bottom of Kyushu — the whole country! In the course of 1 month and I made a movie about that. and that experience is why I stay in Japan and is also a reason why I really love this country because while I was hitchhiking I was picked up by 20 people over the course of the month who took me from place to place and just the kindness, sincerety, and the hospitality of strangers — in this country was so overwhelming to me that I decided to stay in Japan I had been in the country for 6 years at that time. And after that, I said I’m going to stay. So if you’re wondering why I came to Japan I don’t even know the reason why, I guess it was curiosity. The real question is why did I stay? and I think it’s because this country is absolutely beautiful. It’s safe. The food is delicious. I love being a foreigner and being an expat. People look at you different. It’s sort of exciting in that way. I feel that the best way I can help my own country in to — bridge Japan to the rest of the world not just American but — other countries in Asia and to tell the story of Japan to tell you what’s happening in this country and I really love that. TOKYO STATION I hopped on to the Yamanote line and traveled to the next spot The Harajuku/Omotesando area This way, this way, over here. So I had a little trouble asking my self these questions -so I enlisted the help of my friend
-Hello We searched of a quiet place to do an interview The trip took us to Harajuku’s Takeshita Dori where I learned about fashion in a previous episode Passing Harajuku station, we walked to Yoyogi Park and settled in on a bench by the pond Question and answer in the park Q&A in the park Welcome to Yoyogi Park in the center of Tokyo I take in all the top comments, and given to Angela over here who’s going to be asking me these intimate and personal questions because I can’t ask myself. I need someone to ask me Alright, go ahead Get this over with So question 1, from….Wo….. -What…Wo..?
-Oh, Wyatt, Wyatt Wyatt! Wyat Walker Why do you like Japan so much I like Japan because I’ve been here 18 years and it’s part of who I am now. It’s my home True I see Japan and US both being my home, but right now I think I’m more.. connected with Japan But why? Why do you like it? WHY? Um… It’s so easy to live here. It’s so much fun It’s so interesting every day The food, the people The fact that I get to speak in a foreign language, The fact that I’m very different here People look at me funny sometimes, Maybe the way I’m dressed, or the way I walk or whatever -The way you walk!
-I don’t know! It’s just… really interesting to live as an expat in another country and why not Japan Next question from Konan Kun What is your ethnicity? Yeah, this one got asked a lot of me Um, I’m American. 100% American. Yeah, my mother is originally from India. She’s born in Mumbai. My father is American, but his background is German-English. I think there is Polish, and some New Zealand in the family. Oh really? So, I’m mixed. -International
    -Internationally Me… -Internationally You..
-That’s her name. Ok, Konan Kun also asked… Do you live in Japan? Yes, yes … A lot of people ask me, “Do you live in Japan?” Yes, I’ve lived in Japan for … 18 years. Since 1998. Once I left Japan for six months and I came back and I’ve been here ever since. This is my home. That’s an interesting question. Yes — we have … This is a hard name. Yes-we-Hado-ken Who is best girl? Oh, I saw this one! Who is best girl!? Got 17 likes. Wow! I don’t even know what that means, um … best girl I’m not married. I’m single. I’m straight. -Really?
-Yes What? What does that mean? I’m joking. Yeah….yeah… Denny Lee asked Can you show us behind the scenes of ONLY in JAPAN? That’s really good. Um … ok! So I got this 360 camera about a month ago and I’m going to be using this on location shoots just putting it on the side and creating 360 videos which will be behind the scenes and this will be really behind the scenes because It will open up the world in front of the camera and behind it and I’ve created a channel “ONLY in JAPAN 360” which you will be able to see a lot of 360 content I’m separating the two because if you don’t have goggles, If you don’t have Google Cardboard, this format can be a little annoying well you can just press the button, press the arrows on the screen Yeah, you can do that but it’s still annoying You’re always flipping around, If you say something, you have to go back to the person to see them again or you’re in a cafe watching like this and that can be a little strange for people to do so I think it’s good to have a seperate channel Let’s take a break and head to Hachiko Scramble nearby Here are the top episodes in terms of views of the channel Thank you all for making these shows popular Now in the center of the intersection, a short fan submitted video from Mobile, Alabama in the USA We love ONLY in JAPAN My favorite episode is probably the Spochan one ’cause I like to sword fight and we have some light sabers, and I like how you mentioned the the double sided spochan sword that looked like the Darth Maul saber I like your videos a lot. My favorite one was the Gachapon I really want to do a lot of them when we come up to Japan I like the strawberry episode because it has strawberries They are my favorite fruit I love the ice cream episode because it has ice cream in it It’s my favorite desert Thank you John for making ONLY in JAPAN Mata ne~ Mata ne~ Rowland family, thank you very much! Back to the park for some more Q&A. I talked about show’s frequency, and why I make only two a month. I think this channel ONLYinJAPAN is going to right now it’s only twice a month I try to get it out the 1st and the 3rd Thursday. Sometimes it’s a little later, sometimes it’s even earlier but anything more than twice a month is a challenge. -Because I’m on locations and —
-Hahaha You know what I mean! We make these videos.. Most YouTube creators, we don’t have a camera man and audio guys and editors, and producers above us and people telling us what to do. We go on location. There was one in Kagoshima — a volcanic sand bath. I went to Kagoshima by myself I set up three cameras on tripods all around The manager of the place was controlling the camera as a favor and that’s how I operated and I had to move quickly That’s one of the biggest challenges of doing the format that I do is that I don’t have the cameraman to film all the time I really would like to have it but … Which is amazing, your work. Ah, anyways Anyways, ah, Papa Franku asks He asks Why did you decide to live in Japan? I sort of answered this in the opening, I guess I can go a little detailed I came to Japan in 1998 I just finished college I graduated from Ohio State in 1997 I worked all through college, I didn’t have any debt or any loans to pay off I had a little savings and I blew that all in backpacking in 6 months around the world, and when I got back, I needed a job My room mate was a Japanese major He came to Japan in a JET program He sent me an email. We didn’t have any chatting or texting back then He wrote “You got to come to Japan, man. It’s so awesome” He used to say this all through college Used to sleep on a futon, He was a weirdo “Yeah, you got to come to Japan, the place is nice.” You make good money. “It’s weird! It’s awesome! It’s Asia!” So I hadn’t seen (East) Asia yet, I came here. He left — I stayed! And I’ve been here ever since. He was one of the big factors why I came because I had a friend who was here already. I didn’t know any Japanese before I came, I wasn’t interested in manga and wasn’t interested in Martial Arts

Japanese Breakfast Lunch & Dinner in Kagawa Japan | Hidden Gems

    October 14, 2019

what’s up everybody I’m Shinichi I’m sorry today we are here in Kagawa Prefecture Kagawa Prefecture is a smallest Prefecture in Japan but it has tons of things to do and of course lots of delicious food on this video we’re gonna be eating a lot of good food as we always do plus we’re gonna show you guys some of our favourite spots here in this charming city [Music] the first place we are at is a place called lead feeding garden leading garden has more than 400 years of history includes six ponds and thirteen hills and it’s amidst a backdrop of beautiful mountain I’ve read about it I’ve seen photos of this Guardian and it’s even been featured in the Michelin Guide book you know they rated it 3 stars as a must-see place [Music] hi guys it is breakfast time and we are here inside the visiting garden in one of the tea houses and what’s wonderful about this place is that you can eat this breakfast while gazing out at the beautiful scenery outside of the two leading gardens it’s just spectacular I’m so looking forward to this check it out let’s look at it together okay so well reveal what’s underneath this clock check it out what’s underneath here oh that looks like some nice simmered vegetables on this side you see some grilled salmon some shishito peppers um that is a broad bean simmered in soy sauce a tomato you got some cheetahmen Jackal which is like small sardines with probably sliced shishito as well you got your pickled vegetables and of course the main course you have your Oh Caillou which is the rice girl this is very very different though it’s very special made with white rice and it’s a cooked in this tea it’s a special kind of fermented tea and you also see some pieces of sweet potatoes Dona Tomas it has a tea flavor and it’s not to just team it’s different because implemented the flavor but not it’s so strong nice primarily to pepper and saltiness sweetness of rice and potato sweetness perfectly matches and this is a very beautiful on the very room so colorful I directly have this pumpkin episode that’s you forever so well mhmmm and check it out some nicely sized sweet potatoes and there’s a lot of them in here mmm wait is this sweet potatoes but I think this is like potatoes like regular potatoes I don’t think it’s sweet potatoes I think these are regular white potatoes the grilled salmon is one of my favorite things to eat in the morning especially with a Japanese breakfast beautiful color hmm nice and fresh really good flavor so we finished a brick lasted shall we eat some snack in town so we just had a lovely breakfast and I personally enjoyed walking through the gardens I really loved that garden me too it’s always been a dream of mine to go there we’re walking along this street this is a medic I’m a mighty short thin guy okay yeah I can never remember that name but it’s one of the main shopping streets here in Kagawa and as you see there are olive trees and the reason why is because there is an island yeah a lot of people like to visit and that island has a lot of olive trees there they actually make olive oil and stuff like that one of the most popular things to do here in Kagawa this hot satoshi is something to cool me off okay right dear look it’s a gelato shop gelato Mart should we get some gelato yes it’s long [Music] I got the double with the pistachio and the Wissam Bo Hwa’s hambone is a local brown sugar that they use to make confectionery so that’s what I got and I also got the pistachio we just see no extra charge but it’s okay because everything’s made here from scratch it’s very milky it’s like fresh milk with a tinge of brown sugar but I hear that what someone is a very subtle sophisticated type of brown sugar let’s try the pistachio yeah this is supposed to be super good that pistachio is like eating pistachio in frozen form oh my gosh it’s sweet but you still get that roasted pistachio flavor delicious mine is a strawberry tomato and lemon and this green one is celery pineapple and green apple is it amazing this crema won’t first praise in the Italian contest so I wanna eat with tomato tomato strawberry and tomato one like you mas mmm it’s nice strawberry flavor acaba is also famous Bob strawberry it’s so sweet and flavorful have a tomato tomato Reba is nuts awesome it doesn’t disturb just add up the desire to taste them this is dessert not too visible don’t worry celery and pineapple [Music] silly hmm I can taste them three distinctive flavors but the celery flavor is not too strong it’s good pants pineapple celery and green apple once again pineapple green apple sounds like a good combination but celery whoa whoa whoa I’ve never had a gelato quite like this at first I was like whoa I might not I might not like it but you know what it is so different that it’s so good it’s like you no wonder they want an award at least they should win it for uniqueness because this flavor combination is like it’s not subtle at all it’s like right in your face you still get that green apple you still get that pineapple but you also get that bang of celery it’s that’s a pretty amazing combination if you ask me that gel out of place was pretty amazing it really was not even joking I the pistachio was by far my favorite it was so rich and flavorful what about you the ciliary one the celery whatever you want yeah it’s amazing it really was I gotta say that’s my second favorite I never think I would choose a celery gelato over everything else but it was really good I want to come back just to try the other flavors right so delicious we are about to head to lunch I know you’re thinking can you guys still eat actually we have a ways to go we have to drive into the mountainside so uh yeah at the one normal one hour one hour right okay so let’s drive it let’s drive [Music] [Music] so this is our lunch Kagawa yes the dome is a most popular thing so today we came here mishima you dome it’s located in 110 side of Kagawa Iran this shop is rice pale and mountains and this shop is we don’t factory B we are eating decide on the we don’t factor in the menu there are only two items ‘m large or small hot or cold that’s it so we ordered called the small boards and as a topping we can choose two egg green onion and soy sauce put green onion for soy sauce and crack one egg it’s raw egg I’ll a blue egg and mix mix mix very well so direct mouse mmm-hmm the texture of this you don’t so treat Oh the iconic thing of Cargill atom is this chewiness combined with soy sauce and a crema very well it’s like eating like a TGK tamago kake Gohan as you can see one of the highlights of this place is eating your bowl of dongs in front of this rice field so I decided I’m gonna stand here because that special seed that overlooks the rice field is taken so yep diagnosed diagnosed [Music] extremely smooth noodles it’s actually not as um chewy as I thought it was going to be but it’s um perfect you know like even my mother couldn’t eat this cuz my mother you know she doesn’t really like it too chewy I’m eating mine which simply um a little bit of soy sauce green onions a little bit chili pepper no egg in mine it’s delicious guys and by the way this place like so she says they do not make a broth at all which is why they only have the soy sauce because this is simply a noodle factory but this is one good bowl of noodles I gotta tell you and once again eating udon here is what makes this place so special so we came here kotohira should I’m aka Campinas sama and we are standing at the entrance of the shopping street lead that leads to the – right right you know I think most shopping streets that lead to like a shrine or temple they usually have you know shops and restaurants and you know lots of street food today we’re here because we want to sample some snacks and maybe some local treats here sounds it to you yep [Music] so we got some soft-serve guys and this is what some boom flavor what sample is that that brown sugar the local brown sugar that they have you know what I got it I got it eat it cause it’s already melting and as you can see there is these little bubbles around and it’s oh my god okay whoa-ho oh my god that’s delicious the outside is like you know these beads the inside is like Airy and it’s just a thin crust of sugar on the outside these are apparently things that they give for weddings and celebrations and they put this around this wissam bow and soft serve very very nice it’s like slightly sweet candy on top of brown sugar ice cream very rich and good and you know cool cooling on a hot day like today oh this shop name is ass coconut ring and this this candy is called wait there they are stop for waiting it’s so careful Thank You Alison Wow just saw the soft oh stop it has a gentle flavor gentle sweetness mmm I like this and this texture of lady Wow inside ears inside is air and in my mask it’s whatever say Cecotto and disappeared it’s interesting run away we found something else at yogi yokocho can we ah yeah just just a few stores down from where we were we got something else we can tango which translates to watermelon rice cake on sticks and they look so funky and bizarre the same that I’ve never seen them that is really like freaka yeah what not metal watermelon yeah and you know if you guys know what dango is it looks like a dangle right usually dango has three round rice balls on a skewer like this one but this one looks like three tiny watermelons mmm crunchy oh goodness mmm whoa that hit me like three times first of all the outside is like crunchy I’m chocolate tastes like watermelon essence buy-in is like the flavor was watermelon huh more than anything else and then the inside is red good aloma aroma came watermelon aroma this is pretty amazing what a week isn’t it great I like super impressed with this this makes me laugh because it’s so unique and so good bangle badge on over Papa see kebab yeah watermelon come here yeah in front of us there are there’s hundreds of stuff on this we’re actually gonna go up 750 something steps something like that and that’s not even all the way to the summit but that’s how we’re headed to on this scorching hot day ready let’s time out here is 105 steps but in front of me it’s like a war is war here I can see the gate over the shrine maybe this is halfway or these stairs I thought here’s about halfway but it’s not it’s one-third still we have to grab 491 steps from here we can rest for a while it’s flat about ah we made it we made 700 is something something and you know Jeff weii it’s not all the way to the top you when I get to the top it’s like 300 or 400 steps more it’s over a thousand steps although summit we don’t need to go up there do we but it’s good it’s good we had a good climb we’ve got a good exercise because we’re gonna be eating a lot of food today yes yes but this is a beautiful shrine beautiful shrine is this Ryan but is the guardian of the mud in traffic safety oh I see like so for all the people who come on ships and stuff like that maybe something like that here is the observatory and you can see a small mountain looks like Mount Fuji it’s called asana kikuchi-san Aki is all the name of a koala and the shape looks like a Mount Fuji so it is called Sankey Fuji it’s the one iconic mountain around here we have very cute a snack you sure did pick this shape it’s a triangle shape this shape means Oh cute what is it what I say you English Oh cute I really don’t know but it’s those things that you you put on your body like the sore spots and you like it’s hot and it’s supposed to alleviate pains and aches in certain parts your body I don’t know what it’s a nurse my mother uses it all the time and this shop is called Ishita yeah this shop used to be in and at a time this shop over to their customer or queue Oh interesting well this comes in a pack of three of course they have other sizes well got a small pack and this was haha 225 225 yen okay all right and so let’s give it a try is it good oh I love this I I like this kind of um traditional Japanese sweets this one particularly it’s not that sweet the inside is a mixture of white bean paste and egg yolk only which is very very unusual to be honest if you knew Joe that’s unusual you know you usually don’t have them egg yolk in a white bean paste we turn s this outside what much shall I say that cake but the cake part of course and the bunch apart and this um egg yolk well blended it’s not a key not a you know you don’t taste the egg at all basically it’s really well-balanced not too sweet and delicious we are back in town at Maracana short and guy or a shopping street to have a dinner where this place thought bubble gamer and to try put honey cheeky body which is chicken on the bone this is a Kagawa specialty so this is something we have to try before we leave Kagawa the first thing we have is the chicken gaza and these gyoza dumplings are smaller than usual very very crispy on one side and they serve it with the gyoza sauce as well as usual for shop which is a citrusy peppery taste so let’s try this docume hmm that is good actually this is small but it packs a punch super super flavorful time because you’re using chicken instead of pork it’s a lot lighter and not as I’m not as um heavy I guess it’s kind of like if you can imagine that okay next we have Sonic I’ll show you mommy which is another Kagawa delicacy we don’t have this in Tokyo these are broad beans that have been simmered in soy sauce and these are tempura so this is tempura broadbean show you mommy it is delicious this goes so well with beer oh this is delicious I think I have the biomass of a package of these before we leave Kagawa one more thing we saw the specialty is nori cabbagey beautiful one minute remains in sleep beautiful soup sprinkle some parsley other basil I love you your cabeza la cabeza very good very good meet Reba the pepper device is stronger than the regular Lorca bhaji pogreba really good next one this is sweet our meal it’s solid ski touring chicken on the bone chicken on the bone there are two types one is parrot a dark about another one it’s a baby one what child one and we ordered boss so this one is a child one chicken skin part is really crispy Haruto it’s really crispy they’re using spices and God especially garlic not easy garlic flavor and also the so juicy this one this one is a parents I had parents meat is firmer than baby one divinatory the parents on meat is firmer than baby mom what flavor is it well concentrated for me generally they become he’s better because it is so tender mg I do we do apologize for the very noisy atmosphere we are in an izakaya which is Japanese pub and everybody is really having a good time here okay I cut two slices here I believe that you’re supposed to dip the chicken inside this oil that they use because all the spices and the seasons are inside this oil for the young chicken oh oh she said The Outsider crispy is juicy so much flavor has a little bit of spice little bit of get that oil don’t you have to dip it in the oil because this oil is where all the flavor lies so this is the parent I’m not sure if this is the mother or the father we just call this the adult chicken shall we let’s try this one definitely it’s tougher then the younger chicken what I feel like the flavor is more intense there’s a more chicken flavor a deeper flavor okay so we order some rice balls too because that’s what our friend told us to do so I’m gonna dip the rice ball into that oil then the chickens been cooked it dipped my rice balls in there and apparently I suppose tastes really good like this there we go [Music] it tastes like it tastes like garlic rice you know like garlic fried rice because they use garlic to fry the chicken and other spices as well so all that all that delicious spice goes into the oil that’s that I just dipped in it with my rice ball is so delicious seriously good and that my friends is how you eat Thai Gamez local chicken on level okay Satoshi so we have come to the end our eating Day extravaganza specialties yes I gotta say that Kagawa has some pretty darn good food I think so too I am in love with it with the noodles I think you have the best udon noodles in the entire country me too and I actually think me too me too me too and I actually think that you you you you should come to Kagawa just to eat udon noodle me like seriously like I will come back just to eat the noodles did you have any favorite we had a lot of food today I can’t decide to everybody’s stuff every stuff was so good what remain in my brain maybe because we just had it he’s a chicken chicken the last one chicken in the bone the parent chicken parents galas my favorite it was so flavorful probably the most flavorful chicken I’ve had in my entire life well thank you so much for coming along with us we hope you enjoyed this video if you did please give it a thumbs up and if you are new to our channel and you enjoy putting travel videos like this one we would love it if you subscribe thank you for watching see you next food adventure [Music]

In Tokyo, These Trains Jingle All the Way

    October 14, 2019

(humming) – [Narrator] In train and
subway stations all over Japan, you’re likely to hear a fully composed seven-second jingle that is uniquely written for that station. And if you’re one of the millions of Tokyo metro riders You’ve probably heard one of these jingles composed by Minoru Mukaiya. (lively music) (soft music) (upbeat music) – [Narrator] Over time,
Mr. Mukaiya shifted his focus to his other passion-trains- and formed a company
that builds simulators. In this world of trains, he found a new outlet for his music and got to work composing train melodies. Like this one (Shibuya Station music) (pensive music) (Ochiai music) (Takadanobaba music) (Monzen-Nakachō music) (Waseda music) – [Narrator] Having found a
marriage of his two passions, today, Mr. Mukaiya considers
    himself a lucky man.
