HECTOR: NORTHAMPTON POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS WERE ON DAMON ROAD TONIGHT, HANDING OUT FLYERS WITH IMPORTANT LIFE SAVING INFORMATION ABOUT CROSSING TRAIN TRACKS. DAMON ROAD IS ONE OF NORTHAMPTONS BUSIEST STREETS. BECAUSE OF THE TRAFFIC VOLUME, DRIVERS TEND TO STOP ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS THAT RUN ACROSS THE STREET. STOPPING ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS IS BOTH DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL. HECTOR MOLINA: “ALTHOUGH TRAINS PASSING THROUGH DAMON ROAD ONLY TRAVEL AT A RATE OF 30 MPH. THEY HAVE THE POWER TO PUSH A CAR ALMOST A QAURTER MILE BEFORE THEY CAN MAKE A COMPLETE STOP.” THE NORTHAMPTON FIRE DEPARTMENT TOLD 22NEWS THAT IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS WHEN DRIVING THROUGH RAILROAD CROSSINGS. TIMOTHY MCQUESTON: “MAKE SURE THEY STOP WELL BEFORE THE CROSSING SO THAT THERE NOT IN LINE WITH THE GATES WHEN THEY COME DOWN AND THEY’RE NOT CAUGHT BETWEEN THE GATES WHEN THEY’RE ACTIVATED.” IF YOU ARE EVER CAUGHT BETWEEN THE GATES AT A RAILROAD CROSSING, ONE RAILROAD SAFETY INSTRUCTOR RECOMMENDS YOU JUST KEEP DRIVING. RICHARD E. TOWLE: “DRIVE RIGHT THROUGH THEM, THEY’RE MADE OUT OF FIBERGLASS, THEY’LL BREAK, YOU MIGHT SCRATCH THE CAR BUT YOU’LL SAVE YOUR LIFE.” IF YOU NEED TO REPORT AN ACCIDENT ON THE TRAIN TRACKS, CONTACT THE NUMBER LISTED ON THE BLUE AND WHITE EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SIGN. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH A DISPATCHER WHO WILL THEN SEND HELP.

WOMENS UNDERWEAR, AND BEDDING ITEMS FOR VICTIMS OF THE FIRE. A FIRE DESTROYED THE FORMER RAILROAD SALVAGE BUILDING IN TURNERS FALLS THIS WEEKEND. 22NEWS REPORTER MIKE MASCIADRELLI JOINS US FROM OUR FRANKLIN COUNTY BUREAU TO TELL US WHAT THE TOWN’S PLANNING FOR THIS PROPERTY NOW. SMOKE WAS STILL COMING FROM WHAT’S LEFT OF THE BURNED OUT MILL BUILDING TODAY.. 22NEWS FOUND OUT WHAT’S NEXT FOR THIS COMMUNITY LANDMARK . IT’S JUST BEEN SITTING HERE. KIND OF AN EYESORE…AND A HAZARD. NOT MUCH REMAINS OF A THE FORMER RAILROAD SALVAGE BUILDING IN TURNERS FALLS. A FIRE DESTROYED IT SATURDAY MORNING…AND FIREFIGHTERS WERE STILL THERE MONDAY… POURING WATER ON SMOLDERING ASHES. WE STILL HAVE SOME TROUBLE SPOTS IN THE FAR RIGHT HAND SIDE HERE WHERE THE ROOF AND SEVERAL OF THE FLOORS COLLAPSED DOWN INTO THE CELLAR. I HAVE AN EXCAVATOR COMING TO DIG IT OUT…SO WE CAN FINALLY PUT IT OUT. THIS PROPERTY ON POWER STREET IN TURNERS FALLS WAS ONCE A COTTON MILL BACK IN THE 19TH CENTURY, BUT IT CHANGED OWNERS OVER THE YEARS. IT BECAME A LOCAL LANDMARK AS THE RAILROAD SALVAGE STORE, WHICH CLOSED IN THE 1990S. IT HAD BEEN EMPTY EVER SINCE. HOPEFULLY THE TOWN OF MONTAGUE CAN GET SOMEONE IN HERE TO PUT SOME MONEY INTO IT TO GET IT OR BUILT BACK UP FOR SOME TYPE OF BUSIENESS. THE TOWN HAD BEEN WORKING ON DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROPERTY, BUT IT WAS DETERMINED TO BE UNSTABLE. THIS UNFORTUANTE EVENT BRINGS THE NEED TO DO SOMETHING WITH THIS PROPERTY EVEN MORE TO THE FOREFRONT BECAUSE OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE AROUND THE STRUCTURE. KUKLEWICZ TOLD 22NEWS THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL DETERMINE WHETHER WHAT’S LEFT OF THE FORMER LANDMARK NEEDS TO BE TORN DOWN. THE STATE FIRE MARSHALL IS TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE. LIVE FROM THE FRANKLIN COUNTY BUREAU, IN GREENFIELD, MIKE
