Railroad bridge fire halts trains for hours

August 20, 2019

YOU DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHING HAPPENED AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE TRAIN STOPPED. IT IS ACTUALLY NOT AS BAD AS EVERYONE THINKS IT WAS, WE HAD FOOD, HEAT POWER, DID ALRIGHT, DELAY AND DECIDED TO KEEP PASSENGERS ON-BOARD FOR THEIR SAFETY WHEN NEARBY TOWNS LOST POWER DUE TO THE WINTER STORM. JENNIFER: AND THERE WAS ANOTHER ROAD BLOCK FOR TRAINS TRAVELING BETWEEN PORTLAND AND WASHINGTON. A FIRE ON THE ONLY LOCAL BRIDGE THEY USE OVER THE COLUMBIA, PREVENTED THEM FROM CROSSING. JEFF: OUR VELENA JONES IS AT VELENA: PASSENGERS TELL ME THE CREW TRIED TO KEEP THEM UPDATED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BUT ESTIMATED TIMES TO GET HERE TO UNION STATION CONTINUED TO INCREASE AS THE DAY WENT ON. AS THE SUN SET ON UNION STATION. TRAINS WERE STUCK TUESDAY WITH NO WAY TO GET IN OR OUT. THE THOUGHT CROSSED MY MIND BECAUSE OF THOSE POOR PEOPLE AND HERE WE ARE 3 AND A HALF HOURS NOW. VELENA: MICHELLE BECKER HAS BEEN WAITING FOR HOURS TO HUG HER GREAT AUNT JUST ONE OF A NUMBER OF PASSENGERS LEFT WAITING. I LEFT SEATTLE AT 10:30 THIS MORNING. HERE I AM. YOU KNOW WHAT? I WILL THINK TWICE THE NEXT TIME. AMTRAK IS NOT MY FRIEND. VELENA: TRAINS COMING AND GOING FROM THE NORTH WERE BROUGHT TO A STANDSTILL AFTER FLAMES BROKE OUT ON THE ONLY RAILROAD BRIDGE TRAINS USE TO CROSS THE COLUMBIA UNSAFE AREAS. VELENA: BOTH AMTRAK AND UNION PACIFIC TRAINS WERE EFFECTED, LEAVING SOME PASSENGERS WAITING UP TO THREE AND A HALF HOURS JUST MILES AWAY IN VANCOVER. NINE>>ONCE WE MADE IT TO THE BRIDGE I THINK THEY COULD HAVE SENT SOME BUSES FOR US, BUT I THINK THEY HAD A LOT ON THEIR PLATE. VELENA: SOME OF THOSE PASSENGERS CAUGHT THEIR OWN RIDE AFTER EXTENDED DELAYS THAT BRIDGE EVENTUALLY RE-OPENING AROUND 5:30. ORIGINALLY THEY SAID TWO HOURS AND THEN IT WAS LIKE 3, 3 AND A HALF, LONGER THAN WE THOUGHT. VELENA: EVEN AFTER THAT BRIDGE REOPENED, TRAINS WERE DELAYED ANOTHER HOUR BEFORE THEY STARTED ARRIVING HERE AT UNION STATION. PASSENGERS TELL ME THEY ARE HAPPY TO BE OFF THAT TRAIN.

O my, I hope this wasn't the same group that was stuck in Oakridge and who was forced to go back to their pick up destination 🙁
