Officials stress safety around light rail trains

COVER LIGHT RAIL, METRO, AND MARKED TRAINS. OFFICIALS SAY ONE ACCIDENT IS ONE TOO MANY. LIGHT RAIL TRAINS RING THE BELL AS THEY APPROACHED THE STATION. MOST OF THE TIME, THEY ARE SURPRISINGLY QUIET. EVEN AT HIGH SPEEDS.>>THE HIGHEST SPEED IS 125 MILES PER HOUR. LIGHT RAIL GOES TO 55. THE TRAINS ARE QUIET MANY TIMES. A PERSON WALKING ALONG THE TRACKS WHEN THEY SHOULD NOT BE DO NOT HEAR THE TRAIN. REPORTER: IN THE LAST MONTH, OFFICIALS SAY THREE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HIT BY TRAINS. A MAN WALKING ALONG THE TRACKS WAS HIT AND IS STILL IN THE HOSPITAL.>>WE HAVE HAD PEOPLE HIT BY THE TRAINS. THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FATALITY, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURIES. REPORTER: OFFICIALS SAY IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO WALK ON OUR CROSSOVER TRACKS OR STAND AT THE YELLOW LINE. THE SITUATION IS WORSE WHEN PEOPLE ARE DISTRACTED.>>THEY ARE USING CELL PHONES OR HAVE EARPIECES, LISTENING TO MUSIC. THEY DO NOT HEAR THE TRAINS. REPORTER: MTA OFFICIALS SAY IT IS ILLEGAL TO WALK ON TRAIN TRACKS ANYTIME. YOU COULD BE CHARGED WITH TRESPASSING.>>THERE IS A FINE. THE JUDGE LISTENS TO YOUR DEFENSE. YOU COULD BE CHARGED ADDITIONAL COURT COSTS.
