Melbourne Metro Rail Project – Introduction from the CEO

October 12, 2019

Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city.
Projections are for population to double by the middle of the century. Melbourne Metro
is crucial to the future liveability of Melbourne. Currently, the City Loop and the outlying
key stations of Melbourne are at choke point. We can’t run many more services
into the heart of our city. So Melbourne Metro is nine kilometres of twin
tunnel and five underground stations that runs from the north west of the city to the
south east of the city, through the heart. So what it does is effectively increase the capacity of the existing City Loop by about forty five percent. But it also enables us to take two of our
busiest lines that currently run through the City Loop, out of that and run them through
this new tunnel. We actually can run more services on about
seventy percent of Melbourne’s network, as a consequence of this project. The scale and
complexity of this project is enormous and it’s inevitable that there will be an impact
on the city, quite significant in some areas. We’ve undertaken extensive consultation with
our stakeholders, businesses and the community. That’s helped us to establish what we call
a “concept design”. From that concept design we’ve been able to
develop a business case, which we’ve put forward the government and obtained funding. So the
entire project is now fully funded. We’ve also developed a procurement strategy,
which is our contracting strategy to enable us to engage the market and the contractors
who will help us deliver this project. A lot of work’s been undertaken to establish
information that informs the Environmental Effects Statement process, that is now out
on public exhibition. So we encourage the public, our stakeholders,
businesses, to put submissions in on what has been proposed in the EES. Those submissions will ultimately be assessed
by an independent panel later this year and that panel will then make recommendations
to the Minister for Planning, who ultimately decides on the approvals for the project. So the Metro Tunnel is going to be a transformational
project for Melbourne. It’s going to improve Melbourne’s liveability and the way people
can access this great city. And I encourage everyone to get behind the
project and support us to the hill, because this project is so important for Melbourne’s
