Elon Musk’s SpaceX Hyperloop Competition Draws World’s Top Engineers | TODAY

October 10, 2019

JO LING KENT IN HAWTHORNE, CALIFORNIA, WITH THE RESULTS OF THAT.>>Reporter: GOOD MORNING. IMAGINE GOING FROM NEW YORK OR WASHINGTON, D.C. OR L.A. TO SAN FRANCISCO, IN LESS THAN AN HOUR, IN ONE OF THESE GIANT VACUUM TUBES. IT SEEMS VERY FUTURISTIC. BUT ELON MUSK JUST GOT A STEP CLOSER, THANKS TO SOME OF THE BEST ENGINEERS IN THE WORLD. THE RACE FOR THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL IS MOVING FAST. ELAN MUSK IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO HIS AMBITIOUS PLAN OF BUILDING HIS HIGH-SPEED, HYPERLOOP A REALITY. HIS PLAN TO HAVE PEOPLE TRAVELING IN A VACUUM TUBE, BROUGHT TEAMS TO A COMPETITION AT SPACEX HEADQUARTERS. EACH BUILT THEIR PROTOTYPE PODS THAT CAN CARRY HUMANS 700 MILES PER HOUR. THE WINNER, A GERMAN TEAM, HIT MORE THAN 200 MILES PER HOUR.>>WE HOPE THAT WHAT WE HAVE SHOWN CAN MOVE THE TECHNOLOGY FURTHER, SO THE HYPERLOOP CAN BE A REALITY.>>THIS IS ADVANCING THE STATE OF TRANSPORTATION. TRYING NEW THINGS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE, THAT CAN MAKE AN INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE’S LIVES.>>Reporter: THE U.S./CANADIAN TEAM WAS IN SECOND PLACE. THE CONTEST COMES ABOUT A MONTH AFTER MUSK TWEETED HE RECEIVED VERBAL APPROVAL CONNECTING NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA, BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON, D.C. CONCEIVABLY THE TRIP FROM NEW YORK TO D.C. COULD TAKE 29 MINUTES. THAT SAME TRIP ON AN AMTRAK TRAIN RIGHT NOW, TAKES NEARLY THREE HOURS. MUSK PROMISED SAN FRANCISCO TO LOS ANGELES IN 30 MINUTES. AND A TEXAS LOOP AT NEARLY THE SPEED OF SOUND. BUT APPROVAL IS NOT EXACTLY FIRM. THE TRUMP WHITE HOUSE RESPONDING, WE BELIEVE OUR GREATEST SOLUTIONS HAVE OFTEN COME FROM THE INGENUITY AND DRIVE OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR. BUT JUST LAST WEEK, MUSK RECEIVED AUTHORITY TO BUILD A TWO-MILE TEST TRACK. PUSHING THE LIMITS OF HUMAN TRAVEL, A PIPE DREAM THAT’S NOW IN FULL FORCE. TRANSPORTATION EXPERTS SAY WE’RE PROBABLY SEVERAL YEARS AWAY FROM SENDING OURSELVES DOWN THESE TUBES IN MAJOR CITIES. BUT ELON MUSK, NOT LETTING THAT HOLD HIM BACK AT ALL. HE’S PLANNING ANOTHER COMPETITION NEXT YEAR TO SEND MORE SLEDS DOWN THIS TUBE. SHOWING NO SIGNS OF STOPPING.>>WOW, JO. CAN YOU IMAG

Idea: instead of manufacturing new tunnel segments, why not just use the Falcon9 tanks instead?

dang I'm probably stick to high speed train in Asia for now

  • Reply MrJunkTube August 29, 2017 at 10:21 am

The technology is incredible, but dangerous. Imagine just one tiny air leaking spot in the tube. –> You'll get crushed just as if someone would step on anchovies in the can.

Clueless idiots. It will serve only the rich that can afford it, just like Concorde which eventually failed, with the majority going for cheap and cheerful 747 travel.

Did I missed something? This competition took place six months ago. Why do you post this 28.8. when you have nothing to add to the topic?

    It's a pipe dream

  • Reply Tobias Stanisfugl August 30, 2017 at 6:57 pm

    Game:
Bring an old fascinating idea in new clothes and stir up attention from all sides, for own benefit. And create some side boarders, to enlarge and prolong the game with only small own investments. More notorious, better engineers!

    Power:
Musk understanding the problem to get really educated engineers revisions an idea to push more real grip into the hands of coming engineers. A knowledge which no one learns nor experiences virtually in front of a screen. In other words: The more you are able to "debunk" this pipe dream, the more you will be able to be hired by one of Musk's brands. This is a sincere act, since the loss of knowledge for the most basic thermodynamics is somewhat remarkable at ivy league universities.. Those kids today do only rarely build things as we seniors did, but do all the time before screens. Now, that we know, that the brain grows with acting hands, especially, if you make machines.
And he for his own publicity, of course.

    Money:
Some, who like those somewhat scummy businesses where you put on losses, jump on the train. And find investors to source their exorbitant wages by participating in one of these marketing circuses, as shown in one or another form by the two "giants* in this thin ice field.

    Future:
Suddenly too much people make the reality check and lose motivation. Then the game ends, because no more fresh money coming in and the loss of mojo for that loop hype. But maybe a fourth of a generation more able academic engineers evolve…..

Built by inexperienced students who have never designed an actual product. Better than people with 10-20 yrs experience who have seen failure and learned from it, right?

did the tube have a vacuum in it or not?…I would imagine a 200 mph pod on a rail is hardly any breakthrough or proof of concept.

If you clowns double that speed and add a little bit more, you can go as fast as the French and Japanese trains which are, by the way, carrying passengers and they don't need a stupid vacuum tube.

Musk is the master of illusion. Presenting something that is ridiculous as if it feasible, raking in development dollars and subsidies from the Government then moving on to something else that never eventuates. More money borrowed against everyday Americans to Musk.

YET CHILDREN ARE DYING EVERYDAY OF HUNGER WHILE WE PLAY GAMES WITH HOW TO GET FASTER TRAVEL AND GETTING INTO SPACE. WHY?????  UNTIL WE SOLVE THE HUNGER PROBLEM WE SHOULD NOT CARE, HOW ABOUT GIVING THESE JOBS TO PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING FROM HUNGER or SETTING UP SOMETHING IN THEIR TOWN TO CREATE CLEAN WATER AND GIVE THEM A WAY TO MAKE CROPS.  I just dont' get this until we solve the Hunger and starvation problem we are failing as humanity.  This to me is so sick to watch the RICH SPEND MONEY OFF THE BACKS OF THE WORLD TO PLAY GAMES IN LIFE

Most of the naysayers of this technology remind me of the people who thought you wouldn’t be able to breath on trains because they were going too fast or that cameras would steal your soul.

  • Reply Valerie Price June 24, 2018 at 10:31 am

How to get nowhere fast, seeing nothing while you travel. There might as well be no world. All the rushing around, racing to the grave, missing out on the beauty in life. Not my thing.
