Chicopee, F.R.A, and Amtrak police focusing on railroad crossing safety

August 8, 2019

AFTER 11 THIS MORNING. MIKE MASCIADRELLI, 22NEWS. DRIVERS ARE SUPPOSED TO STOP WHEN THEY SEE RED LIGHTS FLASHING AT A RAILROAD CROSSING BUT NOT EVERYONE FOLLOWS THOSE RULES. 22NEWS REPORTER TAMARA SACHARCZYK WAS AT A RAILROAD CROSSING IN CHICOPEE TODAY WHERE THE FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATION AND LOCAL POLICE REMINDED DRIVERS ABOUT THE DANGERS. WE HAD ONE YOUNGSTER WITH EARBUDS ON HERE IN CHICOPEE WHO GOT HIT AND THROWN. IT’S BEEN MORE THAN A YEAR SINCE A 14- YEAR-OLD WAS STRUCK BY A TRAIN IN CHICOPEE. HE SURVIVED THE CRASH.. BUT THOUSANDS OF OTHERS DON’T HAVE THE SAME OUTCOME. THIS IS JUST LETTING YOU KNOW, THAT THERE’S A LOT MORE TRAIN ACTIVITY OUT THERE, AND WE DON’T WANT TO SEE ANYBODY GET KILLED. THE FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINSTRATION AND CHICOPEE POLICE TEAMED UP AT THE PLAINFIELD STREET CROSSING ON MONDAY TO REMIND DRIVERS JUST HOW DANGEROUS THESE CROSSINGS CAN BE. WE’RE JUST HANDING OUT LITTLE BAGS WITH GOODIES IN IT, AND INFORMATINAL CARDS, BASICALLY TO TELL PEOPLE IF THE GATES COME DOWN AND THE LIGHTS COME ON, MAKE SURE TO STOP AND WAIT FOR THE TRAINS TO GO BY. ACCORDING TO AMTRAK A PERSON OR CAR IS HIT BY A TRAIN IN THE UNITED STATES EVERY THREE HOURS, AN ALARMING STATISTIC THAT SHOWS YOU JUST HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO SLOW DOWN WHEN YOU REACH A RAILROAD TRACK, AND STOP YOUR CAR IF YOU SEE RED FLASHING LIGHTS. THERE ARE ABOUT 5,800 CAR-RELATED TRAIN ACCIDENTS EVERY YEAR, ACCORDING TO THE FRA. A MAJORITY OF THOSE CRASHES TAKE PLACE AT RAILROAD CROSSINGS.. WHEN A DRIVER MISJUDGES THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CAR AND THE TRAIN. WE DON’T WANT A FATALITY, AND IT’S TOO EASY TO HAPPEN BECAUSE THAT TRAIN CATCHES UP TO YOU.. THE DEPTH PERCEPTION, SORT OF LIKE AN AIRLINER COMING IN, YOU THINK IT’S WAY FAR BACK THERE, BUT IN REALITY IT’S NOT. JUST BECAUSE A CONDUCTOR SEES YOU, DOESN’T MEAN THE TRAIN CAN STOP. IT COULD TAKE A TRAIN TRAVELING AT 55 MPH MORE THAN A MILE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. IN CHICOPEE, TS, 22NEWS
